Judas Arrieta
Artist
Gipuzkoa, Spain
Judas Arrieta (b. 1971, Hondarribia, Gipuzkoa, Spain) is a Basque visual artist whose work focuses painting, comics, anime, and global pop culture into a vibrant universe of playful critique and joyful imagination. Trained at the University of the Basque Country and the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris, he is known for constructing a visual language that merges
the spirit of childhood with a mature reflection on how images shape identity and society. Deeply influenced by manga, kung-fu films, and television culture, Arrieta’s art celebrates the aesthetic power of popular media while exploring its ability to connect distant worlds—from the Basque Country to China and Japan, where he lived for several years. His paintings and installations are saturated with energy and irreverence, borrowing characters, slogans, and iconography from global entertainment as tools for cross-cultural storytelling. Arrieta has exhibited internationally in Tokyo, Singapore, Santiago de Chile, Beijing, Dublin, and
throughout Spain. Projects like Boiseland at MING Studios in Boise reinterpret Western myths through an Eastern–Basque lens, creating alternate landscapes where history, imagination, and pop icons coexist. In recent years, Arrieta’s research and practice have focused on understanding how fans and
otakus become artists themselves—how devotion to manga, cinema, or video games can evolve into artistic practice. Drawing from his own experience as a self-described otaku painter,
he examines sampling, remixing, and intertextuality as creative strategies that turn fandom into authorship. His work proposes that imagination, play, and obsession can be potent engines of
cultural production. Through color, humor, and cultural hybridity, Judas Arrieta paints from the joyful borderland between high art and fan culture—a place where everyone, artist or fan alike, is free to draw, dream, and play.
